Join us for Give Back Day, taking place the day after Awesomeness Fest on October 26 in beautiful Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Find out how below.

Give Back Day is an opportunity for Afest attendees to participate in a volunteer project which brings the best of Afest out of the conference room and into the community.

Afest’s involvement in Give Back Day began in 2011, and was the brainchild of one of our attendees, Rebekah Uccellini. Rebekah designs Give-Back-Day projects for a living, for everyone from Microsoft to Burning Man. Since 2014 Rebekah has teamed up with a group of Afest attendees from around the world to create this incredible and impactful day, which has fast become one of the highlights of the event.

The day after Awesomeness Fest Croatia, earlier this year, Give Back Day took place. It was led by tribe members Ben Croft, Christian Nicolai and Michael Zielanski who worked closely with Anja Markovic from the Dubrovnik Volunteer Center to make the magic happen.

“Give Back Day was one of the best parts of Afest. After staying in a resort for 5 days it was nice to step out into the community that housed us and give back and share the inspiration we experienced.” – Volunteer at Give Back Day

The day was spent in two locations. First, attendees volunteered at a rundown children’s playground, a playground used by kids from families in need.

The goal was to repair and bring new life to the playground by painting the walls with inspiring art pieces, installing new nets on the football goals & basketball plates, planting olive trees, and playing with the children.

Attendees said that hearing the sound of the children’s laughter echoing through in the background was a gift in itself. It was a day full of joy, laughter and happiness.

The second half of Give Back Day was spent at the Homeless Shelter where the focus was to create a beautiful and safe environment for local homeless people to gather. Attendees installed windows, repaired broken doors, painted walls and window frames, installed door locks, painted the fence, planted trees, created a space for fun activities, and made pancakes for everyone at the shelter.

And it was here at Give Back Day Croatia, where another special initiative was born — ‘The Giving Tree’. The Giving Tree allowed people from the homeless shelter to each add one wish, and all of our incredible volunteers then choose one wish, one person, whose dream they could make come true.

The purpose of Give Back Day isn’t just to volunteer for one day. The purpose is to create a ripple effect of kindness, of giving back, of gratitude.

“Give back day at Afest showed us that wherever we are, we can choose to make an impact on our surroundings. It reminded us that we are privileged and lucky, and that we have a moral responsibility to help the less privileged. Kindness is the expression of love, and I saw so much kindness that day. I see the giveback day as an integral part of Afest. As conscious individuals, we should be looking for more opportunities to give back to society, and make the world a better place to live”. – Volunteer at Give Back Day

It is almost impossible to describe in words the emotions, energy and feelings that are created with giving back – it changes lives, shifts the way we see the world and pushes humanity forward through kindness, compassion, empathy and love.
